Have you ever camped in 22 degree weather without a tent? We have. A week ago, a few brave souls set out into the tundra... Alright, it was a small island in Virginia, but the point remains, it was COLD! We left Friday night, 13 scouts and 4 adults. Once we made it to the island, we began to set up our tarps. Josh had a 17th century reenacting tent!
Saturday morning, we woke up early to the sound of geese. Breakfast was promptly made and eaten, and we set off to the opening ceremony. After a quick opening, the Spartans and the Ninja Bacon patrol began their journey, while the Rockets began setting up candle making.
Our candle making station was a big success! Some other stations included flint and steel, tomahawks, and wilderness cooking! I was told that the muskrat was delicious.
Sunday morning we packed up and left. It was a great trip, and, despite the temperature, there was no loss of extremities!
Thank you to Mr. Jones for taking some great pictures from this event. Also, the video was made by Mr. Hatchell from Troop 738. If you can't view it below, then see: https://downhat.wistia.com/medias/ak8q7kj0ig

A few weekends ago, 9 scouts and a good number of visiting Webelo scouts came to the Humpback rock day hike. It was a short walk mile long walk up to the top of the mountain, where we got a nice view to eat lunch. It could have been warmer, but I did not hear even the visiting Webelo scouts complain for a second! Afterwards, we went down to the parking lot, and we took a trail that was part of the 2,000+ mile long Appalachian Trail. This was exciting for the newer scouts, because some of them had not been on the Appalachian Trail before. The car ride home was a fun one, and most groups stopped for lunch on the way home. Overall, I think it was a successful trip and that there may be more like it in the future.
